Adaptive learning – what is it?
Adaptive learning is a technique used in the field of personalized learning. Its goal is to facilitate learning in an effective, efficient and customizable way for each student’s learning path. A paper by The Library at Educause defines adaptive learning systems as using a “data-driven – and in some cases, nonlinear – approach to instruction and remediation.” That’s good news for learners everywhere as the system will change to fit their needs based on a track record of data as a form of evaluation as opposed to traditional methods in the past where evaluation was mainly the role of the teacher, who was also responsible for an entire cohort of learners, each with different needs.
How can adaptive learning help?
For the students, adaptive learning takes their prior knowledge into account, acknowledges their individual needs as a learner and reduces any knowledge gaps they might have. Adaptive learning also helps teachers streamline their teaching process by identifying areas in which their students may need extra guidance. As adaptive learning systems prioritizes a student’s mastery, teachers need not worry as much about reconciling the differences in learning needs within their classroom; i.e. advanced students, weaker students, etc. and this insight can inform lesson planning. On top of that, teachers can detect any need for remediation for individual students before the risk of withdrawal or failure becomes imminent.
